The Problem

If you find yourself thinking things like

  • My horse isn’t ready for riding right now but I’d like to work on the skills we’ll need
  • I’m riding but feel stuck. I need a way to improve without just riding more.
  • I know groundwork matters, but I’m not sure how to use it beyond basic lunging.
  • I’ve been curious about ground driving, but I’m unsure where to even begin, and how to start safely.
  • I think it would be fun to do obstacles on driving lines some day.

If any of that sounds familiar, this challenge was designed with you in mind.

"I loved learning to drive, but can't believe how much my lunging improved"
Fallon

The Solution

A practical way to build clarity from the ground

Ground driving offers a way to improve communication, balance, and responsiveness without being in the saddle.

It also gives you a clearer view of how your horse responds to position, timing, and contact. These skills carry directly into riding and obstacle work

This challenge walks you through that process in a structured, progressive way, focusing on control, organization, position, and staying safe, so you can build understanding without skipping steps.

"I'm not really small enough to ride Peanut so I really appreciate learning to drive him.
He can build some strength and understanding before his little girl takes over, but I really got to focus on the aids.
For the first time I really understood the importance of the outside rein."
Candace

What This Challenge Is

A calm, progressive introduction to driving skills, or riding from the ground.

Focused on:

  • Control
  • Organization
  • Position
  • Staying safe

What This Challenge Is Not

This is not:

  • Cart driving or harness training (but it is the first step)
  • A competition. Everyone proceeds at their own pace
  • A one-size-fits-all program - every horse is different
  • A shortcut around basic handling skills

You will learn how to influence your horse clearly from the ground, without rushing steps or relying on force.

Training 1:

Control, Organization, and Position

  • Lunging on contact for shape, consistency, and safety
  • Direction changes and transitions, and timing
  • Introducing communication from different positions

You’ll also begin helping your horse get comfortable with the feel and movement of an additional line, setting the stage for the later ground driving work.

Training 2:

Influence The Body
From the Ground

  • Forward, stop, and turn clarity
  • Serpentines and pattern changes
  • Turn on the forehand and haunches

These exercises can be done with one line or two, depending on what improves clarity for your horse.

Training 3:

Integration and Readiness

  • Continue refining one-line or two-line work
  • Progress into more consistent ground driving if appropriate
  • Develop a clearer sense of what to work on next

There is no finish line, only better direction.

How the Challenge Works

Rather than being locked into a strict timeline, this challenge is structured as three trainings delivered the first 3 days of challenge week

During the challenge, you will work through a progressive training structure that allows each horse and handler to move at an appropriate pace

Everyone starts in the same place to make sure no important steps are missed. Progression is based on clarity and confidence, not pressure.

"What a great way to start my granddaughters pony so he'll be ready for her this summer."
Audrey

about LInes and Equipment

Exercises can be done using either (or both):

  • One long line as you would in lungeing
  • Or one single or a pair of driving lines

Many exercises are intentionally taught so they can be done either way.

Practicing them on the lunge often helps handlers focus on position and timing rather than relying on a second rein to steer.

Before You Start

This challenge assumes your horse has basic leading skills and can work calmly on the lead.

If those skills are not solid yet, it is strongly recommended that you start with the Relax & Focus Your Horse course before joining the challenge.

That foundation will make everything in this challenge clearer and safer.

By the end of the challenge, you will have:

  • A clearer understanding of position and influence from the ground
  • Safer, more organized groundwork skills
  • Tools that support both driving and riding
  • Confidence in choosing one line or two intentionally
  • A clearer path forward for your horse’s training

The _____ Challenge isn't just about mastering one obstacle or skill—it’s about building the foundation your horse needs to excel in any discipline.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Absolutely! The Challenge is designed to do from the ground, whether your horse is trained to ride yet or not. We meet you where you are. You’ll learn practical, transferable skills that improve your communication with your horse. Not riding right now? No problem. Ground-driving is a great way to build the pieces you’ll need when you are.

No worries! Each training will be recorded and available until Sunday midnight PDT. And then will be moved to the course platform where you'll have lifetime access.

Each training is designed to be about 20 minutes and pre-recorded to watch at your convenience. The live Q&A and coaching sessions vary depending how many questions there are. The exercises themselves are often best in short sessions so you won’t need to overhaul your whole schedule.

Not at all! This challenge is all about introducing the lines and exercises  in a simple, rider-friendly way. You’ll get step-by-step guidance to help you start where you and your horse are right now. And if you're still figuring out your lunging we'll work from there, adding the pieces as your horse is ready.

Absolutely. While the challenge is hosted inside the Working Equitation community, the skills you’ll gain are the ones every riding horse needs and apply to any discipline, from trail riding to dressage.

That’s the beauty of this challenge. As long as your horse understands basic manners and leading, you’ll be introduced to the next steps in a way that’s accessible for any horse, at any stage.

Here’s what Participants from past Challenges had to say:

"Saying the Challenge has helped a ton is definitely an understatement!"

Brenda: "We've really enjoyed the Reverse Gate Confidence Challenge!!"

Trish: "Had you ever done a reverse gate before?"

Brenda: "We gave it a try last summer, but it ended up causing my horse a lot of anxiety and anticipation. So, saying the Challenge has helped a ton is definitely an understatement."

Brenda B.

"From anxious to confident: How I improved my horse's performance!"

I knew the basics of the pen obstacle - to enter and circle both directions.  What I was missing was how to achieve a smooth transition at the pen entrance, maintain bend and tempo, exit in order to smoothly re-enter the opposite direction while maintaining correct bend.

Trish broke down the pen obstacle in separate pieces to practice then put together. The teaching process led me to successfully achieve my goals to fine-tune the pen.

Monica Falk

Thank you, Trish~it makes perfect sense now that you have explained how to work with the horse's drift, keep their trust, and get them to realize you are working together as a team.
